Barcelona agree to purchase midfilder Arthur Melo from Gremio

The young midfielder has attracted comparisons with Andres Iniesta, and will line up from July onwards at Camp Nou after the clubs agreed a transfer

Barcelona have confirmed that they have agreed a purchase option for Gremio midfielder Arthur, which will allow them to sign the player for an up-front fee of €30 million in the future.

The 21-year-old burst onto the scene in 2017 with a series of fine performances for the Brazilian club, helping them to the final of the Copa Libertadores.

Born on 12 August, 1996 in Goiania in Brazil, Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo, better known as simply Arthur, is a talented midfielder who stands out for his passing ability. The player has shown his quality in his home country with Gremio with whom he has won Brazilian Cup and the Copa Libertadores. He has also represented Brazil at U17 and U20 level and has been called up to the full squad on several occasions although he is yet to make his debut alongside the likes of blaugranes Paulino and Coutinho.

The Brazilian started his career in 2008 in the youth teams at Goiás Esporte Clube before moving on to Porto Alegre club Gremio in 2010. Arthur made his way to the first team under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. Little by little he become a vital figure in the team that won the Copa Libertadores in 2017 in which he was named man of the match in the second leg of the final against Argentine side Lanus.

Premier League giants Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool had all been interested in the 21-year-old.

Arthur could be part of Brazil’s World Cup squad in Russia this summer having earned his maiden international call-up against Bolivia and Chile last year.

The addition of Arthur means Barcelona now exceed their quota of three non-EU players, however, that should soon be remedied when Philippe Coutinho, who is eligible to secure Portuguese passport through his wife, secures EU citizenship. The other non-EU players on the clubs books are Yerry Mina and Paulinho.
