Cavaliers to open facility for workouts friday

The Cleveland Cavaliers are planning to reopen their practice facility on a limited basis Friday amid the coronavirus pandemic, a team spokesman told the New York Times’ Marc Stein.

Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, who first stated the news, noted that the NBA set Friday as the date that teams in cities with softened stay-at-home orders can start to open their facilities under strict guidelines.

Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman and the team’s medical staff reportedly advised players during Zoom calls Wednesday that the facility will open back up for individual workouts. While the Cavs are reopening, Fedor reported that not all teams are going to follow suit even if they are located in areas in which opening their facilities would be permitted.

Everyone who has access to the practice facility will have to adhere to strict protocol upon arriving at the building.

Per Fedor, those attempting to enter will get their temperature taken and have to answer questions about how they’re feeling, where they’ve been and who they’ve been around.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA has told teams not to test asymptomatic players for COVID-19. Instead, the league has given teams with updated information on cardiac screening for players if needed.

Under the guidelines, a maximum of four players can be in the facility at any given time, and they must be socially distant from one another. Also, everyone in the building must wear masks at all times, with the exception of the players during physical activity.

While head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and his primary assistants won’t be allowed to participate in the workouts, players will be permitted to have developmental coaches present if they desire, per Fedor.

The Cavs will reportedly break down their workouts into two-hour windows from Monday through Thursday, with players able to work on the court and in the weight room.

The reopening of some practice facilities is the first of many steps toward potentially resuming the 2019-20 season, which was suspended in March after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus.

No specific plans are in place for when and under what circumstances the season could restart, but there were well over 200 total regular-season games left to be played plus the playoffs.

Yankees to have scan, but Aaron Boone upbeat

Aaron Judge is still not out of the woods yet regarding the fractured rib discovered during spring training, according to a source.

The right fielder is scheduled for another CT scan this month and the injury continues to heal.

The Yankees hope to see continued improvement, but while Judge expressed optimism about an early return after the injury was uncovered, the organization thinks he would be out until June or July.

The time frame may prove to be immaterial, since the delay to the start of the regular season due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made the possibility of any matches prior to then extremely unlikely.

In the meantime, Judge’s rib “continues to heal” and the source stated there had been no setbacks.

There remains no formal plan for Major League Baseball to return after the sport was shut down by the coronavirus.

At the time the injuries — the rib fracture and a punctured lung — were discovered, Judge indicated he expected to be out at least through March. Both injuries are believed to have been suffered on a diving play in right field in September.

The other injured Yankees who may have missed extended part of the regular campaign had it started on time are doing well, Boone said.

Giancarlo Stanton has recovered from the strained calf that sidelined him during the spring and Boone thinks “he should be good to go whenever we get ready to go back.”

Aaron Hicks, who underwent Tommy John surgery following last year’s playoffs, figures to be out until June or July, but Boone had encouraging news on the center fielder.

“He’s doing well,’’ Boone said of the switch hitter. “He’s already doing soft toss from both sides of the plate and throwing 90-plus feet. He’s trending in a really good direction.”

“His rehab has gone really, really well,’’ Boone said.

In the meantime, Boone said he continues to check in on his players and is convinced they will be prepared for whatever this unusual season might have in store.

Jets Quincy Enunwa still can’t play, out for 2020 campaign

New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, who played only one match in 2019 because of a neck injury, won’t play in 2020 after being placed Tuesday on the physically unable to perform list, the team reported.

This was the expected outcome for Enunwa, 27, whose once-promising NFL career could be over. The Jets also placed wide receiver Josh Bellamy (shoulder) on the season-ending PUP list.

Enunwa missed the 2017 season because of neck surgery, and then re-injured his neck in the 2019 opener. When the season ended, he stated he wanted to continue playing but wasn’t sure if he would be medically cleared. He continued his rehab into the offseason, but the signs remained ominous. The organization never factored him into its offseason plans.

After a promising 2018, Enunwa landed a four-year, $33.4 million contract extension, but he has played only one match on that deal.

It put the Jets in a difficult position from a salary-cap standpoint.

Because of the potential cap ramifications, they have to carry him on their payroll.

Enunwa’s 2020 salary ($6 million) is fully guaranteed, and he will count $7.8 million toward the cap. In 2021, $4.1 million of his $7.8 million is guaranteed for injury.

His situation is the same to that of former Seattle Seahawks star Kam Chancellor, who suffered a neck injury in 2017 but remained on the PUP list for the 2018 season because of the cap consequences of releasing him. The Seahawks waited until 2019 to cut him.

Barring a financial settlement, Enunwa’s outcome probably will be similar.

Enunwa, a sixth-round pick in 2014, has 119 career receptions for 1,617 yards and five touchdowns. He sparked a controversy last season by using social media to rip team management for fining him $27,900 for missing two mandatory rehab sessions.

Bellamy, due to make $2.25 million in 2020, played only seven matches last season because of his shoulder injury. He played mainly on special teams, concluding with two catches for 20 yards.

Tennis club apologizes for letting Djokovic train

The tennis club where Novak Djokovic broke confinement rules in Spain stated Tuesday it mistakenly let the top-ranked Serb to practice and apologized for the error.

Djokovic released a video of him training on Monday in apparent violation of Spain’s current rules amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The video posted on Instagram showed Djokovic exchanging shots with another man at the club in the coastal city of Marbella, where the Serb has been staying for the past several weeks.

Djokovic filmed the video while hitting shots and wrote he was “so happy to play on clay .. well, just for a bit with my phone in the hands.”

Spain has eased some of the lockdown measures that had been in place since mid-March, allowing professional athletes to return to practice, but most training centers and sports facilities must stay closed until next week.

“We are sorry that our interpretation of the regulation could have been erroneous, and this could have inconvenienced Mr. Djokovic or any other citizen acting in good faith,” the Puente Romano Marbella Tennis Club said in a statement.

The statement, which was relayed by Djokovic’s management team, said the club got a request from the player to practice and gave him the go-ahead with the “understanding that from May 4 all professional sports players were authorized to train.” The club said it therefore believed he was “permitted to train in our facilities.”

It said it later received a “clarification” from the Spanish tennis federation and “both parties have agreed that training should resume” only next week.

Rafael Nadal stated he also went to train on a court this week, but he did it on private property because the rules weren’t fully clear to him.

Soccer players were among the exceptions who could start training inside sports facilities beginning this week.

Spain has been one of the countries most affected by the pandemic but it started loosening some of its restrictions on movement as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 started to go down recently. The nation went into a lockdown on March 14.

Djokovic recently stated he was against taking a vaccine for the coronavirus if it became mandatory to travel once the pandemic subsides, though he later said he was open to changing his mind.

Monti Ossenfort leaving Patriots to join Titans as Director of player personnel

Former New England Patriots director of college scouting Monti Ossenfort is joining the Tennessee Titans as their director of player personnel, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Titans general manager Jon Robinson worked with Ossenfort for eight years in New England. Now they’ll join forces in their quest to bring a championship to Tennessee.

The news was first reported by Sports Illustrated.

Hiring Ossenfort is one of many Patriots-to-Titans moves since Robinson took over, which began with hiring former Patriots player Mike Vrabel to be head coach. Vrabel played for the Patriots when Ossenfort joined the organization as a personnel assistant in 2003.

Ossenfort recently interviewed for the Cleveland Browns’ GM job, which went to Andrew Berry.

The Patriots blocked Ossenfort from interviewing for the Houston Texans’ GM job last year.

Ossenfort just concluded his 18th season in the NFL and 15th with the Patriots. He spent the past six years as director of college scouting, and has been on other teams’ radar for general manager jobs.

Ossenfort’s contract with the Patriots was set to expire after the draft, and with no opportunities for upward mobility in New England, where director of player personnel Nick Caserio is entrenched as Bill Belichick’s top personnel executive, his best opportunity for advancement was to look elsewhere.

Ossenfort has a strong connection with Robinson, who worked for the Patriots from 2002 to 2013, elevating from area scout to director of college scouting.

Ossenfort was a four-year letterman and two-year starter at quarterback for the University of Minnesota-Morris, graduating from the school in 2000. His first NFL encounter came as a training camp intern with the Minnesota Vikings in 2001.

Bears Decline Fifth-Year Option on QB Mitchell Trubisky, Reports Say

In a not-so-surprising move, the Chicago Bears are apparently declining their fifth-year contract option for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky, the team’s first round draft pick in the 2017 draft, could possibly become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2020 NFL season, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

“The team has liked Trubisky’s attitude since the Nick Foles trade, and it’ll be an open competition,” Pelissero said. “A chance for Trubisky to make himself a lot of money before his contract expires next March.”

The Bears were fast approaching a deadline to determine whether they would pick up Trubisky’s fifth year option.

By declining the option, the Bears quarterback could potentially become a free agent after the 2020 season, but if he has a successful year, the Bears still have options to keep him, as they could either re-sign him to a new extension or apply the team’s franchise tag to him, preventing him from seeking a contract with another team.

In three campaigns with the Bears, Trubisky has compiled a 23-18-0 record, completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 8,554 yards and 48 touchdowns. He has also thrown 29 interceptions and been sacked 93 times.

The 2019 season represented a step back for Trubisky, as he completed a lower percentage of his passes and threw for seven fewer touchdowns than he had in the previous season, despite throwing 82 more passes.

Earlier this offseason, the Bears sent a fourth round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire Foles, who will compete with Trubisky for the team’s starting job.

Bears G.M. Ryan Pace has drafted four players in the first round of the NFL Draft, and is now 0-for-3 on keeping players beyond their first contract. The team also declined the options on wide receiver Kevin White and linebacker Leonard Floyd, and will face a decision next season on the contract of linebacker Roquan Smith.

NBA discusses delaying start of 2020-21 season until December

NBA commissioner Adam Silver and team owners examined delaying the start of next season until December due to complications with the COVID-19 pandemic, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski — an idea that is reportedly gaining traction among owners.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the NBA to suspend operations on March 11. The league presently doesn’t have any specific plans to resume play.

The NBA officially postponed both the draft lottery and scouting combine on Friday, both of which were scheduled to take place this month in Chicago. It did not delay the draft itself — which is currently scheduled for June 25 — however “there’s an increasing belief that it’s just a matter of time” before that happens, per Wojnarowski.

There were more than 1.1 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of Friday afternoon, according to The New York Times, and more than 64,500 deaths attributed to the virus.

Most sports leagues in the country, including the NBA, have considered playing matches without fans present upon return.

The idea behind delaying the start of next season, per Wojnarowski, is to allow fans to be present for as much of the season as possible.

“If you start in December, that doesn’t mean the [fans] are coming back in December, but maybe they’re back in March,” one owner told ESPN.

While talks occurred on Friday, there are “no imminent plans” to make any decisions about next season now. Before that plan is made, the league will almost certainly need to determine how it will move forward with the rest of the current season.

Atlanta Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said in March that he believes beginning the season in mid-December rather than in mid-October would eliminate competition with most other professional sports leagues. Instead of competing with the NFL and college football for the first few months of the season, the NBA would be able to dominate the winter and summer — where Major League Baseball and the PGA Tour are, for the most part, alone in the sports world.

Doing so would push the NBA Finals to August, which would allow the season to conclude just before football begins again each fall.

Murray, Bertens win virtual Madrid Open titles

The inaugural Madrid Open Virtual Pro tournament turned into a showcase event for Andy Murray and Kiki Bertens.

Murray won the men’s side of the bracket, though he was given a stiff test from David Goffin before prevailing 7-6 in the championship match.

Bertens had no such problems in the women’s championship match, cruising past Fiona Ferro 6-1 to virtually defend her Madrid Open title.

Murray got a bye into the final when his semifinal competitor Diego Schwartzman had internet issues that prevented him from connecting to the Playstation’s online server.

Per Tennis.com, Murray and Schwartzman played offline in a match that Schwartzman actually won 10-6 in a super-tiebreaker, but the Argentinian decided to let Murray move forward.

Get all the latest Betting and Sport News updates on your social media outlets.

“We need to talk with the organization to fix this,” Schwartzman said, via Tennis.com. “You deserve to be in the final. We need to split the prize money we share to the foundations. And then you play the final. I think it’s going to be better for TV for everyone. If you are in Europe, the transmission is better.”

After his first unofficial loss of the tournament, Murray rebounded to hold off Goffin with a forehand winner on match point.

The win marks Murray’s first tournament victory of any sort since the European Open last October. He didn’t appear in any official ATP events this year due to an injured pelvis.

Bertens ended Caroline Wozniacki’s comeback in the semifinal with a 7-5 victory. She had a difficult final hurdle to get over to defend her title. Ferro went undefeated in group play and survived a tiebreak versus Donna Vekic in the quarterfinal.

The women’s championship match didn’t offer nearly as much drama for Bertens as her semifinal bout. Ferro does have a gripe about match point when the connection lagged, keeping her from being able to return Bertens’ serve.

Dolphins agree to trade edge rusher Charles Harris to Falcons

When Brian Flores took the reins as head coach of the organization in 2019, things didn’t exactly get off to a roaring start. The end of the campaign showed a sparky Dolphins team that could actually make some waves in the AFC East, but they would have to move around some pieces to become actual contenders. Their latest one comes at the expense of Charles Harris, a veteran pass rusher who was the team’s first-round pick in 2017 out of Missouri.

Harris has allegedly been traded to the Atlanta Falcons, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, ending his time in South Florida and starting his next chapter in North Georgia, and in exchange for only a seventh-round pick.

The Dolphins are trading Harris only one day after they released Taco Charlton, another disappointing first-round pick from the 2017 draft class — a selection that hangs like an albatross around the neck of the Dallas Cowboys — as Flores and the Dolphins look to juice up their defensive front.

Get all the latest Betting and Sport News updates on your social media outlets.

They signed both Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Lawson in free agency and grabbed three defensive linemen in the 2020 NFL Draft, hinting at more changes to come.

The NFL deadline for exercising a former first-round pick’s fifth-year option was rapidly approaching, but the Dolphins opted to move on instead. Harris joins a Falcons defense looking to bolster its pass rush, but one that also waved off exercising the fifth-year option on its own former first-round pick in Takkarist McKinley, making it a rough go as of late for pass rushers taken in that round, that year — although McKinley has had much more success at the NFL level than Charlton and Harris combined.

Harris and McKinley are slated to now be teammates in Atlanta for at least the 2020 campaign, assuming the Falcons don’t eventually ship the latter away down the road via trade. The former is set to earn $1.943 million in base salary this coming season, barring any changes to his roster spot or contract with the Falcons.

PSG named French Champs as Ligue 1 called off

France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel declared Paris Saint-Germain as the 2019-20 Ligue 1 champions Thursday after the remainder of the season was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Big sporting events will not be able to take place before September. The 2019-20 season, notably for football, will not be able to resume,” French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe stated Tuesday.

PSG held a 12-point advantage over second-placed Marseille in the Ligue 1 table when play was halted on March 13.

It’s the third straight Ligue 1 title for the Parisians and the seventh time they’ve finished atop the standings in the past eight years. The club now has nine top-flight championships, which is one behind Marseille and Saint-Etienne for the all-time record.

PSG lost two of their first seven matches to open the 2019-20 but were virtually unstoppable from that point forward.

They ended the coronavirus-shortened campaign on a 15-match undefeated streak.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe tied Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder for the Ligue 1 lead with 18 goals during the term. The Parisians’ Angel Di Maria had more assists (14) than anyone else in the league.

The French league’s decision also throws the remainder of the Champions League campaign into serious question. Both PSG, who had clinched a quarter-final berth, and Lyon were still active in the UCL.

Meanwhile, the LFP opted to move forward with promotion and relegation despite the early conclusion of the season in contrast to the Dutch Eredivisie, which cancelled the remainder of its term last week.

Amiens and Toulouse will be relegated to Ligue 2 with Lorient and Lens promoted, although Amiens informed that they would be opening legal proceedings over their premature relegation from the top division.

PSG, Marseille and Rennes will claim the league’s Champions League spots for next campaign.
