Hugh Freeze resigns as Ole Miss Head Coach

Last Thursday, The Ole Miss Rebels announced the head football coach Hugh Freeze won’t be part of the team anymore. The head coach resigned before giving details in the press conference. Freeze made a one-minute call from a phone to a number that had relation with a female escort service. The call came as a federal lawsuit Houston Nutt filed against the the violation of an agreement. Freeze couldn’t explain the situation but said it could have been a misdial.

Athletics director Ross Bjork checked Freeze’s phone records and found an important pattern. Bjork said Freeze admitted the misconduct before resigning, even though when the new information came public, the coach disappeared. Nutt’s attorney sent an e-mail to the school’s general counsel, referring to the call Freeze made to the school and saying how embarrassing and difficult the situation was. To all the press, Hugh always kept the position that was a mistake and that probably he called the wrong number.

The fact the call lasted for 1 minute, makes the theory of the “misdial” quite unreasonable. Nutt’s explained Freeze and Bjork were among the Ole Miss officials who tried to smear him, by telling the reporters many violations were going on the NCAA infractions against the Rebels. The agency updated the Allegations charged and they were 21 violations with 17 involving the former head coach Hugh Freeze. He finished with a 39-25 record through five seasons at Ole Miss, a statistic that is highlighted by a 10-3 mark and Sugar Bowl victory in 2015 season. However, the team struggled in 2016, with a 5-7 mark and failing to make a bowl game since 2011. Matt Luke will take over as the interim head coach until they find a replacement.
