Clippers look to put away stubborn Nuggets in Game 6

The weight of a Game 7 contest will weigh more heavily on the Los Angeles Clippers, the Denver Nuggets consider.

“To us, Game 7 is just another game,” Nuggets center Nikola Jokic said.

Jokic had 34 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists as the Nuggets stunned the Clippers 111-98 in Game 6 of their Western Conference semifinal on Sunday at the NBA bubble near Orlando.

Game 7 is Tuesday. The winner meets the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

Jokic connected on 13 of 22 shots from the floor, including 4 of 6 3-pointers. Jamal Murray had 21 points, Gary Harris added 16 and Michael Porter Jr. chipped in 13 for the third-seeded Nuggets, who outscored the second-seeded Clippers 64-35 in the second half. “It was just amazing,”

Denver coach Michael Malone told the media after the match. “We had 11 straight stops at one point. Coming into this round they were the No. 1 offense in the playoffs, so I’m running out of adjectives, superlatives, whatever you want to call it to speak on our team because that is a tough, resilient group of you know what. I love our team.”

Paul George had 33 points, six rebounds and five steals for the Clippers, who are attempting to advance to their first Western Conference final.

They are 0-7 in franchise history in previous attempts to get there.

Kawhi Leonard contributed 25 points, eight boards and five assists, while Lou Williams scored 14 points. JaMychal Green had 11.

“Just gave up the lead again, pretty much,” said Leonard, who made 8 of 18 shots and 3 of 5 3-pointers. “They came down and either scored or got fouled in the third quarter, and we couldn’t buy a basket. That’s how they came back.”

The Nuggets will be trying to become the first NBA club to rally from a 3-1 deficit in back-to-back series. They did so versus the Utah Jazz in the first round. And Leonard said the Clippers have to be ready for what the Nuggets have in store for them.

“Just got to leave it all out on the floor,” Leonard said. “Make sure we are paying attention to detail, executing and communicating on the defensive end. That’s all we can do. Go out there and play hard and make sure we know the game plan.”

The game plan Sunday seemed to be going just fine for Los Angeles in the first half. The Clippers coasted to a 16-point halftime lead and went up by as much as 19 early in the third quarter. But the Nuggets outscored them 30-16 in the third and seized control in the fourth.

Clippers coach Doc Rivers said the game swung when Murray, who seemed to have the wind knocked out of him, crashed to the floor after a third-quarter collision under the basket with George.

Nuggets versus Jazz game 7 preview

The Denver Nuggets came back from a two-game deficit and now have an opportunity to eliminate the Utah Jazz. It’s game 7 between these two sides, in the arguably the most interesting matchup of the playoffs so far.

As said above, this is by far the most interesting first-round matchup of them all so far. At first, Denver took the lead, after that, Utah nailed the next three events, but Denver responded, which is why we have a Game 7 coming up our way.

The stakes are high, so expect a fierce clash, like there is no tomorrow. One more info, whoever triumphs here, will meet the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference semifinals.

Jamal Murray is in the elite echelon of scorers in the league, and that is something we knew already. But we didn’t know that the Canadian was this good. He has three consecutive games with 40 or more buckets, and two with 50+ during that time.

So far, he’s been the leading scorer in the playoffs with 37.6 points. Though, all his previous games won’t be important if, by any chance, Denver loses. He already has a label of being soft and without guts when needed the most, and this is the perfect chance for shutting down all the critics.

The way Murray plays, Donovan Mitchell is just one tiny bit better.

He, too, has multiple 50+ points, but unlike Murray, he is much more consistent. The Spida, however, is without the right sidekick in the last few matches, and that is why we saw the Jazz losing those matches.

In order for Quin Snyder’s team success, they have to see Mike Conley perfect. The veteran point guard is Jazz’s X-factor. Also, Joe Ingles needs to have a more important part in the attack.

The momentum is on Denver’s side, and that is why we have to back their victory in this contest. The odds are at -110 for the Nuggets to triumph. We believe that they are mentally stronger, that is have much higher morale than Utah’s guys, who are irritated with all the missed chances for securing the next stage.

Just to remind, both Gobert and Mitchell had outbursts following Game 6, smashing and bashing stuff while exiting the court.

Anthony Davis could miss Lakers’ opener with eye injury

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t know how they’ll look in Thursday’s match versus  the Los Angeles Clippers just yet because they’re waiting to find out just how well Anthony Davis can see.

Davis, who was inadvertently poked in the right eye by Michael Carter-Williams during Saturday’s scrimmage versus the Orlando Magic, did not practice Tuesday.

The All-Star big man spent the session in a seat on the sideline while sporting shaded eyewear.

“He’s day-to-day, and while he’s still dealing with discomfort there is some concern that he could potentially not play Thursday,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said on a video conference. “But we’re hopeful that he does, and we’ll see how that plays out. He’s going to continue to be evaluated each day.”

Vogel, who has used the term “discomfort” on several occasions to describe Davis’ situation since Saturday, was asked to elaborate.

Does that mean blurred vision? “I don’t know if I’m allowed to really get into the details of it, other than that’s what they told me to report,” Vogel said. “So that’s all I can give you.”

Davis looked dominant in L.A.’s second scrimmage since reporting to Orlando, putting up nine points and 10 rebounds in limited minutes before exiting the game when Carter-Williams’ hand unintentionally caught Davis’ face while he was swiping for the ball. Davis, an eight-year veteran, averaged 26.7 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.4 blocks in his inaugural season with the Lakers before the NBA went on hiatus in March.

The Lakers will have to update Davis’ status on Wednesday, according to league rules. The NBA recently told teams in a memo that participation status for every player — detailing an injury, illness or the potential for a rest day — has to be submitted by 5 p.m. ET the day before a game, according to The Undefeated’s Marc Spears.

Vogel’s colloquial use of “day to day” for Davis is not an established status. Teams must choose to designate their players as available, probable, questionable, doubtful or out.

Clippers to land bought-out Reggie Jackson

After agreeing to a contract buyout with the Detroit Pistons, guard Reggie Jackson plans to sign with the LA Clippers upon clearing waivers, league sources told ESPN.

Jackson had become the highest-impact player available in the buyout marketplace. Several compatitors had interest in him, but his focus had been on the Clippers in the event he was able to secure a contract buyout, league sources said.

Jackson, 29, will play a significant role on the Clippers’ second unit, where coach Doc Rivers is eager to implement Jackson’s playmaking and scoring abilities on a roster that could be the NBA’s deepest.

Jackson was completing the final season of a five-year, $80 million contract with the Pistons. The Pistons and Jackson’s agent, Aaron Mintz of CAA Sports, completed the buyout terms earlier Tuesday before reaching an agreement with the Clippers on Tuesday afternoon.

Jackson has been a longtime friend of Clippers star Paul George and had long hoped to play with him, sources said.

Jackson has averaged 14.9 points and 5.1 assists in 14 games this season. He missed several weeks to start the season due to a back injury.

In nine NBA campaigns with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Pistons, he has averaged 12.9 points, 4.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds a game. Jackson was a key performer in a backup role to Russell Westbrook and James Harden in Oklahoma City earlier in his career.

Jackson is expected to be one of the top guards available in summer free agency.

The moves leaves just Derrick Rose and Brandon Knight as the teams’ only true point guard options but expect two-way player Jordan Bone to have more of a role down the road.  Also Bruce Brown should see plenty of time once again at PG like he did when Jackson was injured.

This also opens up a potential reunion with Tim Frazier who was released when the team made the two for one deal at the deadline moving Andre Drummond to Cleveland for John Henson and Knight.

Lebron James aggravates groin injury in loss, could miss time

Kawhi Leonard scored 11 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and had 12 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Clippers defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 111-106 on Wednesday night in the NBA’s marquee Christmas game.

LeBron James, who ended with 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, aggravated a nagging groin injury after a first-quarter collision with Patrick Beverley and could miss game time moving forward.

According to ESPN, several members of the Lakers organization have already approached James about the urgency to sit out and rehab his groin injury until he feels fully recovered.

“I felt healthy going into the game,” James told the network. “I got kneed in the groin taking a charge from Pat Bev, and it kind of set me right back to where I was five days ago.”

Montrezl Harrell had 18 points off the bench, Paul George added 17 and the Clippers improved to 2-0 versus the Lakers this season. Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers with 25 points while Anthony Davis had 24. The Lakers have lost a season-worst four straight games.

Los Angeles had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but video review showed James touched the ball last after Beverly knocked it away as James went up for a three.

George hit two free throws for the final margin.

James, who turns 35 this week, suffered a torn left groin versus the Golden State Warriors last Christmas that derailed the Lakers’ season.

Fortunately for the Lakers, the schedule is about to get a bit easier. They have a back-to-back looming with the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks, though Luka Doncic remains out. After that, the Lakers play four consecutive home games versus opponents not currently in the postseason picture, so if James needs time off, they should be able to hold down the fort while he recovers.

Considering the groin injury that ruined James’ 2018-19 season, the Lakers seemingly got off easy here. They may not be as fortunate if James pushes the issue. If rest is his best chance at a speedy recovery, then rest should be the priority until he returns to full strength.

Kawhi Leonard misses third straight game for Clippers

Kawhi Leonard is missing his third straight match for the Los Angeles Clippers, again delaying his on-court pairing with new teammate Paul George.

George was in the lineup Monday night versus his former team, Oklahoma City, which traded him to the Clippers in the off-season.

Leonard bruised his left knee in a loss at Houston last Wednesday and didn’t play at New Orleans or versus Atlanta last week. Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers says it was “very possible” Leonard was going to play Monday. Rivers has displayed little concern that Leonard will be out long.

“I just know it’s going to happen,” he said of Leonard and George playing together for the first time. Leonard has missed five of the Clippers’ 14 games. When he’s been in the lineup, he’s averaging 26.8 points.

Get all the latest Betting and Sport News updates on your social media outlets.

George has helped mitigate Leonard’s absence, scoring 70 points in 44 minutes in his first two games back. He recorded 18 points on Monday, including a 3-pointer with 25.9 seconds left to put the Clippers up for good.

Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Leonard is day-to-day after further evaluation on the knee revealed nothing serious.

This all comes shortly after the debate over Leonard’s load management briefly consumed the NBA when the star sat out a nationally televised matchup versus Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Just a few days later, Leonard suffered his injury versus the Rockets.

Leonard was initially listed as questionable heading into the game, but the Clippers might be treating his injury as conservatively as possible. His next opportunity to play will come Wednesday, for a marquee matchup versus the Boston Celtics. At the end Los Angeles Clippers fans are going to have to wait a few more days to finally see Kawhi Leonard and Paul George playing together.

Clippers beat Spurs as Leonard scored 38 against former team

Gregg Popovich and Kawhi Leonard traded some laughs and pleasantries after Leonard’s new team, the Los Angeles Clippers, overpowered his former coach and the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night.

If Leonard has any more nights like that against his former club, the normally irascible Popovich won’t be smiling again.

Leonard scored 38 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Clippers’ 103-97 win, which handed the Spurs their first loss. It is Leonard’s first points-rebounds, double-double this season. It is also his first double-double in three meetings versus San Antonio, where he played seven seasons (2011-18) before being traded to Toronto in July of 2018.

The 38 points ties for the fifth-most Leonard has scored in a regular-season game in his eight-year career. He took a career high 32 shots.

”It was something I look forward to,” Leonard said about facing the Spurs. ”Just to be able to play against a great coach and my old teammates is always fun.” Leonard is 2-1 versus his former team. While his departure from San Antonio wasn’t amicable, Leonard said his relationship with Popovich is good, for the most part.

Popovich didn’t have much to say about Leonard postgame other than: ”I thought he was great.” When someone tried to get Popovich to expound, he replied: ”Doc’s coaching him, I’m not. I just said he had a great game, there’s nothing else to say.”

Another thing going well is Leonard’s start with the Clippers, the team he signed with as a free agent during the offseason.

He has scored 30 or more in three of his first five games and is the first Clipper since Blake Griffin in 2015 to have at least 38 points and 12 rebounds in a game.

”Tonight was a great night for him to do his thing. We just followed his lead,” Clippers guard Lou Williams said. Leonard – who sat out Wednesday’s game at Utah due to load management – took control of the game in the second half, when he had 25 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Los Angeles went on a 9-1 run to take a 64-55 lead with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter. Leonard scored five of his 10 third-quarter points during the rally, including a dunk after a steal of DeMar DeRozan at midcourt.

It’s the second game in as many night for the Cavaliers (29-11), who beat the Brooklyn Nets, 91-78, on Wednesday night.

In the win, Kevin Love bounced back from his worst game of the year, scoring 17 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. LeBron James chipped in with 17 as well. Timofey Mozgov made his third straight start, getting the nod over Tristan Thompson in an attempt to combat the size of Brook Lopez. Mozgov scored 11 points.

Los Angeles (27-14) has won 11 of 12, including a 140-132 overtime win against the Houston Rockets. The Clippers’ quality stretch has coincided with Blake Griffin’s absence. The power forward is expected to miss his 12th straight game with a partially torn left quad.

Point guard Chris Paul has elevated his play with Griffin sidelined. Paul is averaging 18.2 points and 9.6 assists, which ranks fourth in the NBA.

This will be the first meeting between Los Angeles and Cleveland this season, with the latter sweeping two games last year. The Clippers are just 3-14 SU and 4-13 ATS in the past 17 meetings dating back to 2007, with the under cashing in four of the last five.

The Cavs have not performed particularly well when playing the second game of a back-to-back lately, going 3-3 SU and 1-4-1 ATS in their previous six.

Milwaukee Bucks (10-15) at Los Angeles Clippers (15-10)
NBA Basketball: Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 10:30 pm (STAPLES Center)
The Line: Los Angeles Clippers -10.5

The Los Angeles Clippers are trending upward and look for their ninth victory in 11 games when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

The Clippers have moved up to fourth place in the Western Conference due to the hot stretch and have also won seven consecutive home games against the Bucks.

Los Angeles completed a 4-1 road trip with a 105-103 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday as backup shooting guard Jamal Crawford delivered the tiebreaking 3-pointer. “I thought both our coaching staff and the guys on the floor made a lot of cerebral calls and a lot of cerebral plays down the stretch,” shooting guard J.J. Redick told reporters. “First of all, it was resolve and secondly it was really, really strong execution. It’s very promising. It was a very promising win.” Milwaukee is struggling on the road this season and lost their 10th straight away game when they fell 113-95 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in the opener of a four-game road trip.

The outcome was disappointing for the Bucks as it came in their first game since ending Golden State’s historic 24-0 start Saturday in Milwaukee.

The Bucks have lost three of their last four and were embarrassed last night in a 113-95 loss to the lowly Lakers. Michael Carter-Williams led the scoring with 19 points, Khris Middleton added 16 points while Giannis Antetokounmpo had 15, but the Bucks just got manhandled by the Lakers who simply looked like the hungrier team. Greg Monroe was a late scratch for the Bucks after he bumped knees with a teammate at shootaround so he isn’t a certainty for tonight’s game

The Clippers have won eight of their last 10 overall and will be going for a third straight after sneaking past the Pistons in a 105-103 overtime win on Monday. Blake Griffin had a massive game of 34 points on 15 of 30 shooting, JJ Redick added 24 points while Jamal Crawford had 14 points and the game-winning three. With the win, Los Angeles improves to 15-10 on the season and 6-5 on the road.

In ATS trends, the Clippers are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 home games and 1-3-3 ATS in their last seven games overall.
