Altuve, Tucker homer to lead Astros over Athletics 4-3

Jose Altuve hit a three-run homer and Kyle Tucker’s tiebreaking solo shot in the seventh inning lifted the Houston Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

The triumph is Houston’s sixth consecutive and moves the team to a season-high 21 games above .500 at 54-33.

Altuve’s home run gave the Astros the lead in the third, but the A’s scored two in the sixth to tie it.

There was one out in the seventh when Tucker connected off Sean Manaea (6-6) on his home run to right-center to put Houston on top again.

Blake Taylor (2-2) wriggled out of a a jam in a scoreless seventh for the victory. Ryan Pressly pitched a perfect ninth to collect his 16th save and lower his ERA to 1.46.

Matt Olson and Elvis Andrus had solo homers for the Athletics, who lost for the fifth time in six games.

Manaea permitted four hits and four runs — three earned — in 6 2/3 innings to extend his losing streak to a career-long four decisions.

Oakland had a chance to take the lead in the seventh after a pair of errors by Altuve and a wild pitch by Taylor left the Athletics with runners on second and third with no outs. But Taylor retired Andrus and Olson to end the threat.

Houston starter Luis Garcia permitted two hits and a run with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Cristian Javier replaced him to start the sixth and was greeted by the home run from Andrus, which bounced high off the wall above the seats in left field to cut the lead to 3-2.

There were two on and no outs when Jed Lowrie tied it on an RBI single to right field. The A’s tied it on a wild pitch by Javier.

Sean Murphy then hit a fly ball to left field which Michael Brantley caught before throwing home just in time for catcher Martín Maldonado to tag Ramon Laureano as he slid into him.

There were two outs in the first when Olson smacked his 21st homer of the season into the seats in right field to give the A’s an early lead.

Abraham Toro reached and advanced to second to start Houston’s third on an error by third baseman Chad Pinder before a single by Myles Straw.

Altuve hit his homer to left field with one out in the inning to put the Astros on top 3-1.

Marcus Semien, Toronto Blue Jays reach agreement on 1-year, $18M deal

Infielder Marcus Semien is in agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year, $18 million contract, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Semien will become the second star and fourth free agent added by the Blue Jays during a slow offseason amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Toronto gave outfielder George Springer a $150 million, six-year deal. Toronto also agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Kirby Yates ($5.5 million) and Tyler Chatwood ($3 million) and re-signed left-hander Robbie Ray to an $8 million, one-year contract.

Coming off a career year in 2019, Semien struggled in 2020 while dealing with a rib injury, as the shortstop hit just .223 with 7 home runs, 28 runs, 23 RBIs and 4 stolen bases for the Oakland Athletics. His production was down largely due to his strikeouts being up, as he fanned on 21.2% of his plate appearances.

It was a different story for Semien in 2019, when he concluded third in AL MVP voting after posting personal bests with 33 home runs, 92 RBIs and a .285 batting average while playing in all 162 matches. His WAR (8.9) was third in the majors that season, and he parlayed that into a one-year, $13 million deal — more than double his contract after earning $5.9 million in 2018. He earned $4,814,815 in prorated pay for 2020.

Semien was tied for 190th among batters in WAR in 2020, with 0.5. Even with the decline in 2020, he is one of just six hitters to account for at least 9.0 WAR in the past two seasons combined.

Semien’s 151 runs scored since the start of the 2019 season rank second among all American League players, and his 100 extra-base hits rank fifth.

In eight MLB campaigns, Semien, who is above average when it comes to base running, has a .254 batting average with 115 home runs, 380 RBIs, 467 runs scored and 66 stolen bases — but with 731 strikeouts in 3,266 at-bats — for the Chicago White Sox and A’s.

Toronto went 32-28 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, concluding third in the AL East behind the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees and qualifying for the expanded postseason despite behind forced to play home matches in Buffalo, New York, due to Canadian government restrictions on travel. The Blue Jays were swept in two games by the AL champion Rays in a first-round series.

Toronto has an emerging young core and is adding major contracts, while younger players such as Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have relatively low salaries because they remain shy of eligibility for arbitration.

It is not clear where the Blue Jays will play home games when the 2021 season starts.

MLB Baseball: Friday, May 20, 2016 at 9:35 pm (O.co Coliseum)
C Sabathia (2-2) (3.81) vs. S Gray (3-4) (5.84)

The Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, in the first game of a weekend series at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California.

The Yankees have also been less prodigious base stealers; while they had 13 steals in the first 11 games, they’ve only had 12 in their last 18. In the last 30 days, that’s good for 9th best in the AL.

The Boston bats got the best of the Oakland Athletics for the second straight night with a 13-5 decision on Tuesday night. Athletics Sean Manaea was hit hard with eight runs allowed on ten hits over 2.2 frames with Daniel Coulombe giving up three more. The A’s totaled 15 hits and walked once with Coco Crisp driving in a pair while Marcus Semien went 2-4 with an RBI and run. Overall every starter recorded at least one hit. Eric Surkamp will be on the mound to oppose the Red Sox in Wednesday action.  Surkamp has four starts under his belt and has gone 2-2 with a 5.59 ERA over 19.1 innings.
The Boston Red Sox have been crushing the ball and were at their best Tuesday, which overcame some average starting pitching. Red Sox starter Sean O’Sullivan was charged with four runs on 12 hits through six innings which was good enough to pick up the win. The Boston bats amassed 16 hits and a trio of base on balls with Travis Shaw going 3-5 with a homer, five RBI’s and two runs while Hanley Ramirez was 3-4 with a homer, two RBI’s and three runs. Xander Bogaerts and Chris Young each scored two times each. And every starter but one scored or drove in a run. Rick Porcello toes the rubber against the Athletics looking for his 6th victory. Porcello hopes to bounce back from a 3-2 loss at the Yankees with all three runs plated on six hits and a pair of BB in seven frames.

Oakland is 1-7 in their last 8 overall and are 1-7 in their last 8 games on grass while the over is 15-5-2 in their last 22 Wednesday games. Key Hitters

Red Sox: Brock Holt

2016 Season (25 Games): .282/.354/.388, 2 HR, 17 RBI
Career vs A’s (12 Games): .302/.375/.326, 4 RBI

The Brock Star has recovered from a slump to collect 5 hits in his last 14 at-bats (.357). Holt’s batting average plummeted to as low as .246 during his recent slide, but has now bounced back to the range he has been at in his two previous seasons with the Red Sox.

Athletics: Josh Reddick

2016 Season (31 Games): .319/.375/.474, 4 HR, 15 RBI
Career vs Red Sox (24 Games): .294/.354/.506, 4 HR, 17 RBI

The former Red Sox outfielder is having a career year so far. While he hasn’t quite displayed the type of power he has in the past, his AVG, OBP and SLG are all at career levels. He’s done some damage against his former team in the past, so Red Sox pitchers will need to be wary of Reddick when he steps to the plate in this series.

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels

The Angels have finally caught up to the Astros in this crazy AL playoff race. The Los Angeles Angels are now in control of their playoff fate thanks to one of their longest winning streaks of the year.

Los Angeles didn’t have to sweat too much for its seventh win in a row, taking an early six-run lead Tuesday in an 8-1 victory. With Houston falling 6-4 in Seattle, the Angels (83-74) moved a half-game in front of the Astros for the AL’s second wild card.

Albert Pujols had an RBI double among his three hits, Erick Aybar drove in three runs and the Angels took over the lead for the second wild-card spot with their seventh consecutive victory, 8-1 over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

A few minutes after matching their longest winning streak of the season, the Angels (83-74) moved a half-game ahead of the Astros (83-75) when Houston lost 6-4 at Seattle.

Nick Tropeano (3-2) struck out 11 during 6 2-3 innings of three-hit ball for the Angels, who have won 10 of 12 overall during their majors-best 18-8 run through September.

The Angels remained two games behind the AL West-leading Texas Rangers (85-72), who beat Detroit. The Minnesota Twins (81-75) were rained out in Cleveland, dropping them 1 1-2 games behind Los Angeles in the wild-card race.

With four games in Texas to close the season, the Angels can dictate their playoff standing no matter the result of the wild-card race. Rebounding splendidly from an awful August, the Angels have chased down the AL leaders with less than a week to play – but still plenty to lose.

Tropeano was outstanding in a big moment for a fill-in starter who has provided depth in the Angels’ rotation all season long. He nearly doubled his previous career high in strikeouts and left to a standing ovation from the Big A crowd.

Max Muncy homered for the last-place A’s, who have lost four straight and nine of 10.

Chris Bassitt (1-8) yielded eight hits and six runs before getting chased in the fourth for Oakland.

Mike Trout and Pujols had back-to-back doubles in the first inning, with Trout scoring his 100th run of the season. The 24-year-old reigning AL MVP is the first player in Angels history to score 100 runs in four separate seasons.

Pujols keyed the Angels’ fourth-inning rally with a leadoff infield single and a stolen base, running impressively on a sore foot that has limited him to designated-hitting duties for weeks. Los Angeles got all four RBIs with two outs.

The Athletics have an overall money line of -2,876 and a record as the favorite of 32-36.
