Houston Texans’ Benardrick Mckinney expected out for season

The Houston Texans inside linebacker corps has taken a hit to its leadership and on-field ability.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Pro Bowl inside linebacker Benardrick McKinney will undergo shoulder surgery, which will keep him out for the rest of 2020. The club is expected to place McKinney on injured reserve.

The former 2015 second-round pick from Mississippi State was unavailable for the Texans’ 30-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 at NRG Stadium. McKinney was given the questionable designation on the Friday before the AFC South showdown but was unable to play after being a game-time decision.

McKinney’s season presumably ends with four games, all starts, and 37 combined tackles with one tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

In McKinney’s absence versus the Jaguars, former 2016 undrafted free agent Tyrell Adams opposite Zack Cunningham provided 13 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery in his lone start of the campaign, playing 89% of Houston’s defensive snaps, while inside linebacker Dylan Cole did not play a defensive snap.

“T.A., he stepped in and made some plays,” interim coach Romeo Crennel stated. “So, that’s the name of this business, the next guy up. We tell them that all the time that they have to be ready when their number is called and yesterday the guys whose numbers were called, they performed well.”

McKinney, who had 37 tackles in four games, is playing on a five-year, $50 million contract extension he signed in 2018. McKinney was drafted by the Texans in the second round in 2015. He has 11.5 career sacks, 530 tackles and four forced fumbles.

Spurs LaMarcus Aldridge out for season after shoulder surgery

Seven-time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge will miss the rest of San Antonio’s season while he recovers from surgery on his right shoulder, a major blow to the Spurs’ postseason probabilities, assuming the season continues as planned.

The Spurs announced Monday that Aldridge had the surgery on April 24, stemming from an injury he suffered in a game at Utah on Feb. 21.

San Antonio is one of the 22 teams will that report to the ESPN Wide Wide Of Sports complex at the Disney campus near Orlando, Florida, starting next month, when the NBA plans to resume its season. The Spurs have been to the playoffs in 22 consecutive campaigns, matching the longest streak in NBA history.

When play resumes, the Spurs will be among four teams — the others being Portland, New Orleans and Sacramento — that are all separated by a half-game in the race for ninth place in the Western Conference and potentially a berth in a play-in series. The gap between those four teams is .010 percentage points. Aldridge played in two more games after getting hurt, including one on March 10, when he scored 24 points in the Spurs’ win over Dallas. The NBA suspended its season the following day because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Aldridge turns 35 next month. He concludes this season averaging 18.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

The Spurs say Aldridge “is expected to be fully cleared for all basketball activities” in time for training camp ahead of next season. Based on the NBA’s current calendar plans, training camps for 2020-21 are likely to start in November.

San Antonio now has very few options to turn to in their frontcourt, and that comes down to a number of poor decisions on their part. During the offseason, they traded future star shooter Davis Bertans to the Washington Wizards in order to create the cap space to sign Marcus Morris, who then reneged on their agreement to join the New York Knicks. Only three days before Aldridge’s injury, the Spurs bought out versatile forward DeMarre Carroll, allowing him to join the Houston Rockets. That will force the Spurs to rely on younger players like Trey Lyles, Luka Samanic and Chimezie Metu.

If nothing else, that will give San Antonio a glimpse into its future. Aldridge will turn 35 in July, and his contract expires after next season. Aldridge’s days as a superstar for the Spurs were limited as it was. After this injury, both his future and San Antonio’s are in even greater doubt.

Kyrie Irving to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Kyrie Irving tried to keep playing through pain, a cortisone shot no longer providing enough relief.

Eventually, he and the Brooklyn Nets decided it’s best to get his right shoulder taken care of now and get healthy for next season — when Irving and Kevin Durant can lastly play together.

Irving will have arthroscopic surgery and miss the rest of the campaign, Nets general manager Sean Marks said Thursday.

“Kyrie mentioned he was playing through pain and you have to give him a lot of credit for that.

He wants to be out there and playing with his guys,” Marks said. “But there comes a point where you say enough is enough and again, it goes to long-term health. And the best thing that (we) could do is to shut it down and get this taken care of once and for all.”

Coach Kenny Atkinson said the point guard was still having trouble with the shoulder that started troubling him in October and sidelined him for 26 matches earlier this season.

“Some days it was OK and other days it bothered him,” Atkinson said before the Nets faced the Philadelphia 76ers. “Obviously, it is difficult to perform under those circumstances.”

Irving said pain in the shoulder initially worsened after a game on Nov. 4. The Nets then went on a five-game road trip, where Irving continued to play until the pain got so bad he was having trouble lifting his shoulder.

He got a cortisone shot on Dec. 24 and was able to return on Jan. 12, but he acknowledged that surgery might still be necessary. Irving met with a specialist this week and by deciding to have a procedure now, his first season in Brooklyn ends after just 20 games.

Irving averaged 27.4 points, with a 50-point game on opening night and a 54-point performance versus Chicago on Jan. 31. He played only one more game after that.

Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky had surgery on left shoulder

Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky underwent surgery shortly after the season to repair the partially torn labrum in his left shoulder, a person with knowledge of the situation corroborated. ESPN first reported Wednesday that Trubisky had surgery.

The postseason procedure was widely expected after Trubisky’s left shoulder popped out of joint and back in when he was sacked on Sept. 29 versus the Vikings.

Trubisky is expected to participate in the on-field portion of the Bears offseason program, which can start April 20. That it’s his non-throwing shoulder is crucial to such a relatively fast return. Trubisky was injured six plays into that Vikings game.

He missed the rest of that 16-6 triumph and the following game versus the Raiders in London. He played the final 11 games of the season with a harness on his left shoulder. He insisted the injury did not hinder him more than the standard toll of football affects any player.

His regression in his third campaign was a leading reason why the Bears ended fourth to last in the NFL in scoring and second to last in yards per play. The Bears were worst in the league in yards per pass attempt.

The Bears have said Trubisky will be their starting quarterback next season.

The second overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft, Trubisky finished the year 28th in total QBR (39.4), tied for 27th in touchdown passes (17), 21st in passing yards (3,138), 32nd in yards gained per pass attempt (6.1) and 28th in traditional quarterback rating (83.0).

The Bears went 8-8 and failed to reach the playoffs.

In 2018, which was Matt Nagy’s first season as head coach, the Bears went 12-4 as Trubisky passed for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and rushed for 421 yards and three touchdowns.

Pace insisted in December that the Bears remain committed to Trubisky as their starting quarterback, but Chicago is expected to upgrade at backup quarterback in the offseason.
