Washington Wizards’ Bradley Beal scores 50 but is absent for OT because of hamstring, ankle injuries

Bradley Beal scored 50 points, but the Washington Wizards guard sat out the end of regulation and overtime with a left hamstring strain as Washington outlasted Indiana 133-132 Saturday to overtake the Pacers for the No. 9 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Beal stated he tweaked the hamstring in the second half and that it intensified in the last minute and a half of the fourth quarter. He also tweaked an ankle.

Wizards coach Scott Brooks stated he was unsure how serious Beal’s hamstring injury is and that the guard’s status will have to be determined over the next few days before Washington plays at Atlanta on Monday.

“I knew it was a little tight in the second half,” said Beal, who checked out of the game with 21 seconds left in regulation.

“First play of the second, I twisted my ankle … I went back out there, my left hammy felt a little tight. I didn’t think anything of it, kept playing. I think the layup on [Doug] McDermott put us up one, it kind of intensified a little bit, and then the floater I missed at the end, it definitely kind of put me over the top.”

Beal drilled 19 of 31 shots in 39 minutes.

His fifth career 50-point game came on the night when teammate Russell Westbrook made NBA history by tying Oscar Robertson for most career triple-doubles with 181.

Westbrook had 33 points, 19 rebounds and 15 assists, and he made two free throws with a second left to give Washington the overtime victory. He even blocked the Pacers’ final shot.

The Wizards (32-36) play their next two games at Atlanta before returning home to face Cleveland and Charlotte. They lead the Pacers (31-36) by half a game for ninth place and trail the Hornets (33-34) by 1.5 games for eighth.

“Let’s hope for good news and that he is all good to go,” Westbrook said of Beal. “His night can’t go unnoticed either. He had 50 … He has been keeping us together along the season and [been] very exceptional. I am grateful to have him as a teammate.”

‘Nervous’ Kevin Durant shines in return from injury, calls Brooklyn Nets debut ‘good step’

After a year and a half of Achilles rehabilitation, Kevin Durant returned to the basketball court for the first time on Sunday for the Brooklyn Nets’ preseason game versus the Washington Wizards.

“I was anxious, nervous,” Durant stated afterward. “I visualized this moment for so long — nine, 10 months of thinking about how it would be, this next phase of my career. I felt like I was chomping at the bit, especially once COVID hit because I didn’t see a future — when the season was going to start in the future. I was going through it.

“So to go through this felt solid.”

The first points in the game came from an authoritative Durant dunk. He followed that with an assist to DeAndre Jordan for a dunk.

The Nets went on to defeat the Wizards 119-114. Durant concluded shooting 5-of-12 from the field with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 24 minutes of play. “It felt great, you know, to be back in a routine and get back on the floor and feel like a player again,” he said. “I didn’t think I played great. I felt I had some solid moments.”

One of them was when he drew a charge on Washington’s Rui Hachimura early in the game.

“I definitely am feeling it right now,” Durant said with a laugh. “It’s good to get back in the flow of things, and it definitely gives me some confidence. … It’s a good step, and I am trying to build on it.”

Before the match, first-year head coach Steve Nash said he hoped to play both Durant and Kyrie Irving “north of 20 minutes” in each of Brooklyn’s two preseason games.

“When you have that type of injury,” Nash said of Durant after the game, “it is kind of remarkable he’s at the level he’s at.

“It’s amazing. This is an injury that very few people have conquered, so to speak. … It’s beautiful to see him back on the basketball court. I think the world missed him — I certainly did.”

Irving, who hasn’t played since February after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, finished with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

Irving, who played for 18 minutes, declined to speak to reporters after the game, continuing to break the league’s media rules despite his being fined $25,000 on Friday for not speaking to reporters.

During the Nets’ weeklong training camp, Durant was not ready to make any proclamations about how much he would resemble his pre-Achilles injury self before actually playing in a game. After one preseason game, Durant stated he still isn’t ready to make any declarations.

“I want to play at the highest level of basketball — the highest intensity of basketball, and that’s not in the preseason,” Durant said. “I want to play at an elite level late into the season, playoffs. That’s when I want to play my best basketball, so I’m working toward that point.”

Since the game ended, Durant said he has been fielding texts and phone calls from friends, colleagues and acquaintances asking how he is feeling.

“I can’t wait ’til that’s over with so I can get back into the swing of things and just feel like one of the guys again,” Durant said. “So it was a good first step.”

Wizards’ John Wall says he is 110% but still working at rehab

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall declared himself fully recovered after two operations that sidelined him for the past 1½ years and said he is “itching” to get back on the court next campaign.

Speaking on a video call Tuesday to discuss his “202 Assist” program to help pay rent for people in the nation’s capital affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Wall said he is “still taking my time at the rehab” and working to get himself “in the best shape possible.”

“I’m 110%,” the five-time All-Star said. “I’m healthy.”

He has not played in an NBA match since December 2018. Surgery for bone spurs in his left heel ended that season; while he was working his way back from that, he tore his left Achilles tendon and needed another operation in 2019.

That held Wall out for all of the current season, which was suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m itching to get back out there,” he said Tuesday.

When play was halted, the Wizards were 24-40 and ninth in the Eastern Conference, 5.5 games behind the team in the last playoff spot, the Orlando Magic. Wall’s backcourt mate, shooting guard Bradley Beal, was second in the league in scoring at 30.5 points per game.

“I’m just focused on getting back out there and watching how Brad has developed, how our team has developed,” Wall said, “how we have made changes in the organization to prepare ourselves for next season and see what we can do.”

He thinks NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will put the safety of players and their families first when determining whether and how to resume this season.

If that can’t be certain, Wall said, “I think they’ll stop the season and prepare for next year.”

The Wizards’ practice facility is closed because of lockdown measures, so Wall has been working out at home. He uses an app the Wizards gave players with information about weightlifting, rides his bike and works on shooting and ballhandling at a half-court he has at his house.

Wizards’ Brown out for a month with hurt calf

When players report early to build chemistry with their teammates ahead of training camp, it is usually a good thing. For the Wizards this summer, it has led to an unfortunate string of bad injury luck.

First Isaiah Thomas tore a ligament in his left thumb, on his shooting hand, and required surgery that will keep him out of all of the preseason and likely the start of the regular season as well. Now, as the Wizards announced on Tuesday, Troy Brown Jr. is dealing with a left calf strain. His timeline is four weeks.

That will put the start of the regular season in jeopardy for Brown as well.

The news broke four weeks and one day before the Wizards’ first game, on Oct. 23 at the Dallas Mavericks. These injuries are on top of forward C.J. Miles’ foot surgery in July. He was at a Mystics’ playoff game last week still in a walking boot, which is not a great sign for his availability in training camp, which begins Tuesday. When he had the surgery on July 25, the Wizards said he would be re-evaluated in six weeks. It has now been two months.

Thomas, Brown, and Miles are three rotation players. The Wizards are also missing John Wall, who remains sidelined as he rehabs from a ruptured Achilles. The injuries are piling up and they haven’t even held their media day.

Brown’s injury is extra pertinent because he figures to be in the same position mix as Miles. If you are filling out a starting lineup for the Wizards, those are probably your two best choices at small forward. And the Wizards don’t exactly have a lot of depth behind them.

Up next could be Justin Anderson, who is a roster-fringe journeyman at this point. Second-round pick Admiral Schofield is probably not ready for important minutes. First-round pick Rui Hachimura seems more suited to play the four. And Jordan McRae seems to be a better fit at guard.

Two struggling Eastern Conference teams meet at the Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks host the Washington Wizards in the regular season of the National Basketball Association.

The match-up is on February 9, 2016 at 8:00 PM ET.

Both teams are below the .500 mark this season and are looking for a spot in the playoffs. A win over each other should be a big deal for the franchises.

Between the two, the Wizards are dubbed as the better team on paper but have found wins hard to come by as they struggle with injuries and very inconsistent playing.

The Wizards have lost six of their last eight games and are coming off a painful 108-104 loss at New Orleans. John Wall had a big game of 23 points and 10 assists, Bradley Beal added 22 points while Otto Porter Jr had 20 points but it still wasn’t enough to keep up with the Hornets who outscored them by 60-46 in a dominant second half. With the loss, Washington falls to 22-27 on the season which leaves them three games out of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Knicks have lost nine of their last 10 games and are coming off a fifth straight loss, a 101-96 defeat to the Nuggets at home. Kristaps Porzingis and Carmelo Anthony led the team with 21 points each while Arron Afflalo chipped in with 15 points, but the Knicks just went ice-cold in a 24-17 fourth quarter dominated by the streaky Nuggets. With the loss, New York fell to 23-31 overall and 14-14 at home where they’ve lost six of their last seven.

With the loss, Denver falls to 17-29 on the season and 8-14 on the road.

Meanwhile, the Wizards have lost four of their last five games and are also looking to avoid a third straight loss after getting blown out by the Raptors in a 106-89 defeat on Tuesday. John Wall had a rough shooting night but still managed to lead the way with 18 points and 14 assists while Otto Porter had a decent game of 15 points on seven of 11 shooting, but the Wizards were always a step slower than the Raptors, especially in the second half where they were outscored by 54-39. With the loss, Washington falls to 20-23 on the season and 10-9 on the road.
