Texans Sentreal Henderson out for season

Texans starting right offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson is out for the remainder of the season due to a broken left ankle suffered Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Henderson will undergo surgery Tuesday and be placed on injured reserve.

“Significant ankle injury,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said.

It’s an unfortunate situation for Henderson, who was signed to a one-year, $4 million contract in March. He’ll be paid his $1.2 million base salary while on injured reserve, has already received a $500,000 signing bonus, a $300,000 first-game 53-man roster bonus and a $500,000 salary advance.

However, Henderson won’t collect a total of $1.4 million in per-game active roster bonuses while he’s sidelined.

The Texans are expected to have Julie’n Davenport replace Henderson at right tackle, as he did Sunday during a loss at Gillette Stadium, with rookie Martinas Rankin stepping in for Davenport at left tackle. The Texans will also likely audition free agents to add depth.

“Yeah, it’s tough,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “He was playing well in the game. I will say this, I think that Martinas Rankin went in there and did a nice job for a rookie and I think he’s going to be a really good player.

“He just needs to keep improving every day. But, I think he really did a nice job, but obviously that hurts your depth when your starting right tackle goes down.”

Henderson was in his first year with Houston after spending his first four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He started all 16 games of his rookie year after being a seventh-round pick out of Miami in 2014, but he slowly saw his role reduced as his career continued.

The 26-year-old dealt with a 2016 suspension for substance abuse and only appeared in eight games over the past two years, starting one.

While he got another chance to show what he could do on a one-year contract with the Texans, the latest injury will likely keep him out for an extended period.
