Yankees look to continue crushing Orioles pitching

Babe Ruth hit 60 homers in 1927 and Roger Maris went deep 61 times in 1961 for the Yankees. New York is on verge of surpassing both marks in its season series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Already with 59 homers in the first 17 meetings with the Orioles, the Yankees get another chance at bashing long balls Tuesday night when the teams play the third game of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees lead the season series 15-2, and their 14-game winning streak over the Orioles is the longest in a season over an opponent since they took 15 straight against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954.

Out of all the hitters, nobody has torched the Orioles more than Gleyber Torres, who hit three homers in Monday’s doubleheader when the Yankees claimed an 8-5 victory in the opener and an 11-8 win in the nightcap. Torres has 13 of New York’s homers against the Orioles. Half of his career-high 26 homers are off Baltimore, and his total is the most against any opponent in a season since divisional play started in 1969.

“Anytime you have that kind of a year against a team, it’s crazy, but I think guys typically have success against one team for whatever reason,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Gleyber has obviously had a lot of success against them.”

Overall, the Yankees are homering once every 10.25 at-bats against the Orioles. Baltimore has served up 248 homers, an American League record and tied for the second most all-time with the 2017 Reds, 10 away from the major league record set by Cincinnati in 2016.

The Yankees, who head into Tuesday with 12 wins in their past 14 games, are attempting to beat an opponent 16 times for the first time since going 16-6 against Cleveland in 1960. The Orioles enter Tuesday with seven losses in their last eight games, but on a smaller scale than Torres, Trey Mancini has done well against the Yankees. He homered in both games Monday, and six of his 29 homers are against New York.
